Abstracts

Since the end of the 19th century, urban life in Brazil has undergone significant transformations.  The perspective of public health, in which urban order, social order and medical approaches intertwine, comes to play a particularly major role in management plans in the large urban centers which are launched in the new century.  Nevertheless, this phenomenon is not limited exclusively to the largest communities.  Its importance is felt even outside the metropolis.  The case of two townships located in the backlands of the Brazilian Northeast, Floresta and Villa Bella, is entirely representative of  these small and medium-sized rural towns which attempt to import new models from the capital citieswhere, like in Europe, the values of power, health and beauty emanate.  Thus, we are witness to a game of imitation between these small and medium-sized Brazilian cities and  their larger counterparts, a game which is also at play between these larger cities and European urban centers.  Nonetheless, various misunderstandings take place, through both projected and perceived images, in these two townships in the rural interior, which also serve as the stage for a phenomenon of banditry, the cangaço.  Ultimately, the health perspective leaves lasting marks even upon the historiography
